Cookie Policy

This site sets no cookies of its own. Here is the whole picture.

The short version

This website sets no cookies of its own. It stores nothing in your browser — no cookies, no local storage, no session storage — and there is nothing here to consent to or opt out of.

The one exception

The Contact page embeds a Google Map so you can find our office. That map is served by Google, and Google may set cookies in your browser when it loads. We have no access to those cookies and receive nothing from them.

If you would rather not load it, you can:

  • avoid the Contact page, or
  • block third-party cookies in your browser settings, or
  • use a content blocker, which will stop the map loading. Everything else on the Contact page — the address, phone number and email — works without it.

No analytics

We do not use Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight or any comparable tool. We do not know how many people visit, which pages they read, or where they came from, beyond the server logs our host keeps for security.

If that changes

If we ever add analytics we will say so here first and, where the law requires it, ask you before anything is set.

CLIMATE  ·  July 2026

Preparing for mandatory climate disclosure under ISSB

The first reporting cycle is the one that sets your baseline. What finance teams should have in place before it starts.

What ISSB actually asks for

IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 are the ISSB's two standards. S1 covers sustainability-related financial disclosures in general; S2 is specific to climate. Both are written for investors, which is the detail that changes how you approach them — the question is not what you did for the environment, it is what climate does to your cash flows, access to finance and cost of capital.

S2 requires disclosure across four pillars inherited from the TCFD: governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets. If you have reported under TCFD, the structure will be familiar. What is new is the rigour — S2 expects industry-specific metrics and, where you have set climate targets, the information a reader needs to judge whether they are credible.

Adoption is national, not automatic

The ISSB publishes the standards; it does not mandate them. Each jurisdiction decides whether to adopt, adapt or ignore them, and on what timetable. That means the first question is not “what does S2 say” but “which regulator applies to us, and what have they actually required”. Groups operating across borders frequently find they are subject to more than one regime with different effective dates.

In India, listed-entity sustainability reporting runs through SEBI's BRSR framework rather than through ISSB directly. Where a company also reports to investors abroad, both can apply at once, and the sensible response is to build one dataset that can serve both rather than two disclosure exercises.

Where first-time reporters lose time

Scope 3. S2 requires disclosure of Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, and for most companies the data does not exist yet in usable form. It sits with suppliers, in procurement systems that were never built to carry emissions factors, or nowhere at all. Reliefs for the first reporting period exist in several jurisdictions, but they postpone the problem rather than remove it.

The second is the connection between the sustainability report and the financial statements. S1 requires the two to be consistent and published at the same time. Where sustainability reporting has historically been run by a separate team on a separate calendar, that alignment is a process change, not a drafting exercise.

What to do before the cycle opens

Establish the reporting boundary and confirm it matches the consolidation basis used in the financial statements. Work out which Scope 3 categories are relevant and start the supplier engagement that will take longest. Document the governance — who reviews the numbers, who signs them off — because that is disclosed as well.

Assume the first year's numbers will be restated. Building the trail that lets you restate cleanly is more valuable than getting an estimate closer to the mark on the first attempt.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

CARBON  ·  June 2026

Navigating Article 6.4 and the voluntary carbon market

Where the Paris Agreement's crediting mechanism sits alongside the voluntary market, and what “high integrity” has come to mean.

Two markets, not one

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement covers cooperation between countries on emissions reductions. Article 6.2 governs bilateral transfers of mitigation outcomes between governments; Article 6.4 establishes a centralised crediting mechanism under UN supervision, the successor to the Clean Development Mechanism.

The voluntary carbon market is separate. Standards such as Verra's VCS and the Gold Standard issue credits to projects and sell them to buyers who are not under a compliance obligation. A corporate buyer will usually be operating here, not under Article 6.4 — but the two interact, and that interaction is what makes accounting difficult.

Corresponding adjustments

When a credit generated in one country is used towards another country's target, the host country must make a corresponding adjustment: it adds the reduction back to its own inventory so the same tonne is not counted twice. This is the mechanism that prevents double claiming, and it is the reason a credit's provenance now matters as much as its vintage.

For a corporate buyer the practical consequence is that credits are no longer interchangeable. A credit with a corresponding adjustment and one without support different claims, and describing them the same way in a report is the kind of error that surfaces during assurance.

What integrity means in practice

Additionality — would the reduction have happened anyway? Permanence — can it be reversed, as forest carbon can by fire? Leakage — did the activity simply move emissions elsewhere? Measurement — is the baseline defensible? These are the questions buyers are now expected to have asked, and to be able to evidence that they asked.

Independent initiatives have emerged to assess methodologies against criteria of this kind. They are useful, but they are not a substitute for looking at the specific project you are buying from.

Credits are the last step, not the strategy

The sequence that survives scrutiny is measure, reduce, then compensate for what genuinely remains. A purchase programme that runs ahead of a reduction plan reads as substitution, and increasingly attracts the regulatory attention that accompanies claims about carbon neutrality.

Document why a residual is residual. That reasoning is what a reviewer will ask for, and it is far easier to write down at the time than to reconstruct later.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

BRSR  ·  June 2026

BRSR Core: getting your assured indicators right

BRSR Core moved a subset of indicators from disclosure into assurance. What that changes about how you collect them.

What BRSR Core is

The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report is SEBI's reporting framework for listed entities. BRSR Core is a defined subset of its attributes that carries a further requirement: assurance. The rest of the BRSR is disclosed; Core is checked.

That distinction is the whole point. An indicator that will be assured has to be reproducible by someone who was not there when it was collected — which is a different standard from one that only has to be stated.

Assurance changes the data, not just the report

An assurance provider works backwards from the number to its source. They will ask which systems it came from, who entered it, what conversion factors were applied, whether the boundary matches the one described, and what happens at sites that did not report.

Spreadsheets assembled by email at year end do not survive this. The work is not writing the disclosure; it is making the underlying collection traceable — defined owners, a defined calendar, and a record of every estimate and the basis for it.

The intensity ratios catch people out

Several Core attributes are expressed as intensities — a quantity per unit of output or per rupee of turnover. That makes the denominator part of the assured figure. If revenue is restated, or production is measured differently by two plants, the ratio moves for reasons unrelated to performance.

Agree the denominator with finance before the year starts, and use the same source the financial statements use.

Value chain is the slow part

Where Core attributes extend to the value chain, the constraint is supplier response rather than internal effort. Suppliers have no obligation to you on your timetable, data quality varies widely, and the first cycle usually reveals that a material share of spend sits with suppliers who cannot yet answer.

Start with the suppliers that matter by spend or by risk, and record coverage honestly. A disclosed coverage percentage with a plan to improve it is defensible. An implied completeness that assurance then contradicts is not.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

Start with the suppliers that matter by spend or by risk, and record coverage honestly. A disclosed coverage percentage with a plan to improve it is defensible. An implied completeness that assurance then contradicts is not.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

Turning net-zero commitments into credible roadmaps

The distance between announcing a target and being able to evidence it, and what closes that distance.

A target is a claim about a pathway

“Net zero by 2050” states an endpoint. What makes it credible is the path: a base year, a defined boundary, interim milestones close enough to be accountable, and named actions that account for most of the reduction.

Interim targets matter more than the endpoint. A 2050 commitment made by people who will not be there to answer for it costs nothing; a 2030 target sits inside the tenure of the people who set it.

Boundary first, always

Before any target can be modelled, the boundary has to be fixed: which entities, which scopes, which categories of Scope 3. The GHG Protocol offers a choice of consolidation approaches — equity share, financial control, operational control — and they produce different inventories for the same group.

Boundary changes later are the most common reason a roadmap stops being comparable to its own base year. Where they are unavoidable, recalculate the base year and say that you did.

Separate what you can do from what you are hoping for

A defensible roadmap distinguishes reductions already funded, reductions that are technically available but not yet approved, and reductions that depend on something outside your control — grid decarbonisation, a technology that is not commercial, a supplier's own programme.

Presenting all three as one line is what makes a plan collapse under questioning. Presenting them separately makes the plan usable as a management tool rather than only as a statement.

Governance is what makes it survive

Roadmaps fail on ownership more often than on modelling. Each milestone needs a name against it, a budget line, and a review point in the ordinary management calendar rather than in an annual reporting scramble.

Under disclosure regimes derived from the TCFD structure, that governance is itself disclosable. Building it because the plan needs it, rather than because a standard asks, tends to produce something that works in both directions.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

GOVERNANCE  ·  May 2026

Building board-level oversight of sustainability risk

The structures that make sustainability a board matter rather than a reporting exercise.

Why the board, specifically

Disclosure frameworks built on the TCFD structure open with governance, and they ask a narrow question: how does the board oversee climate and sustainability risk? Not whether the company has a policy — how the board itself is informed, how often, and what it decides.

That question is difficult to answer well after the fact. It is answered by minutes, terms of reference and papers that already exist, or it is not answered.

Committee design

There is no single correct structure. Sustainability oversight can sit with the full board, with an existing risk or audit committee, or with a dedicated committee. Each has a trade-off: a dedicated committee gives focus but can isolate the subject from capital allocation; folding it into audit ties it to assurance but competes with a heavy agenda.

What matters more than the choice is that the mandate is written down, that someone on the body can interrogate the material, and that the reporting line into the board is explicit.

Give the board something decision-shaped

Boards are given sustainability information as achievement — totals, percentages, initiatives. Risk oversight needs the opposite: what could go wrong, how likely, how large, what would be done, and what it would cost.

The useful test is whether a paper supports a decision. If nothing in it could change what the company does, it is a report, not oversight material.

Connect it to remuneration carefully

Linking pay to sustainability metrics is common and can be effective, but a metric attached to an incentive is a metric under pressure. Anything used in remuneration should be one that would survive assurance, with a defined boundary and a stable denominator.

Where a measure is genuinely qualitative, saying so is better than engineering a number that gives false precision to a judgement.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

EHS  ·  April 2026

From compliance to culture: the ROI of a strong EHS system

Lagging indicators tell you what already went wrong. What to measure instead, and why it is harder.

The trouble with counting incidents

Recordable injury rates are the standard measure of safety performance, and they have two structural problems. They are rare events, so small numbers move the rate for reasons that have nothing to do with safety. And they are outcomes — by the time the metric moves, the harm has occurred.

There is a third, less comfortable problem: a metric that determines how a site is judged creates pressure not to record. A falling injury rate and a falling reporting rate look identical on a dashboard and mean opposite things.

What a leading indicator looks like

Leading indicators measure the activity that prevents harm rather than the harm itself: near-miss reports raised, hazards closed within the target period, permits audited against what was actually done, planned inspections completed, corrective actions overdue, training current for the work being performed.

Each is a choice about behaviour. Counting near misses says reporting is welcome. Counting overdue actions says raising something creates an obligation to resolve it.

Where ISO 45001 fits

ISO 45001 is a management system standard: it specifies how hazard identification, worker participation, competence and incident investigation are organised, not what your injury rate should be. Its value is that it forces the process to exist and be auditable.

Certification is not the same as a strong safety culture. It establishes that a system exists and is followed; whether people raise problems is visible in the leading indicators, not in the certificate.

Making the case internally

The return on prevention is real but awkward to evidence, because the benefit is an incident that did not happen. The arguments that carry are the ones tied to things the business already tracks: lost time, plant availability, insurance and contractual terms, and the prequalification requirements that decide which work you can bid for.

Frame it as operational reliability rather than compliance and the conversation usually changes.

Working through any of this? We can scope what applies to you and what it will take.

WHO WE ARE

To make responsible business practical.

Roots Sustainability is an ESG, sustainability and climate advisory firm helping businesses turn responsibility into lasting value.

OUR MISSION

Building trust through expertise

Sustainability should be a source of resilience, efficiency and long-term advantage — not a compliance burden. We bridge the gap between what standards require and what organisations can realistically achieve.

We work alongside enterprises and institutions to navigate a fast-changing landscape of regulation, disclosure and climate risk — with clarity, rigour and measurable outcomes.

In a market crowded with ambition but short on execution, we bring something simpler: deep technical expertise, a structured methodology, and a commitment to results that hold up to scrutiny.

SECTOR EXPERTISE

Every sector fails
compliance differently

Eleven sectors, each with its own regulatory pressure and its own way of going wrong. Open the one you work in.

SECTORS

Where we work

01Infrastructure

Large infrastructure is committed at financial close, but the environmental and social work that decides whether a site can be handed over starts long before it and continues past commissioning. Land acquisition, forest diversion and resettlement each move on their own statutory timeline, and none of them compresses to match a construction programme. Where funding is multilateral, a second set of safeguards sits alongside Indian consents and is monitored by lenders for the life of the loan.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Land and resettlement', 'text': 'Acquisition under the RFCTLARR Act 2013 carries social impact assessment, consent and rehabilitation obligations that determine when land can be handed over, not only what it costs.'}
  • {'title': 'Clearance sequencing', 'text': 'Environmental, forest and wildlife clearances are granted by different authorities on independent timelines, and one outstanding approval can hold an entire programme.'}
  • {'title': 'Two standards at once', 'text': 'IFC Performance Standards and World Bank ESF requirements sit above Indian consents on stakeholder engagement, grievance mechanisms and labour, and lender monitoring continues after commissioning.'}

What we deliver

  • ESIA and lender-standard gap assessment
  • Resettlement planning and livelihood restoration
  • Clearance strategy and permitting support
  • Construction-phase E&S monitoring and reporting
SafeguardsESIA
02Manufacturing

A plant's licence to operate is written in measurable terms — consent conditions, effluent parameters, stack limits, waste manifests — and every one of them is auditable on an ordinary working day. The same plant is now asked for assured disclosure and Scope 3 data by listed parents, buyers and lenders, while the process heat running its boilers, furnaces and dryers has no drop-in substitute. The work is to run compliance, safety and decarbonisation off one set of plant data.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Consent conditions', 'text': 'Consents to establish and operate under the Water Act 1974 and Air Act 1981 carry site-specific effluent and emission limits, and renewal rests on monitoring records the State Pollution Control Board reads back parameter by parameter.'}
  • {'title': 'Safety and health', 'text': 'Hazardous processes, contractor-heavy shopfloors and ageing equipment carry Factories Act obligations for hazard control, occupational health surveillance and incident investigation, examined most closely after something has already gone wrong.'}
  • {'title': 'Thermal load', 'text': 'Energy intensity targets on designated consumers under the PAT scheme and customer requests for Scope 3 data land on the same energy balance, where the hardest part is process heat rather than electricity.'}

What we deliver

  • Consent compliance and environmental monitoring programmes
  • ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and process safety
  • Scope 1-3 accounting and decarbonisation roadmaps
  • BRSR Core reporting and assurance readiness
EHSNet Zero
03Energy

An energy project's hardest problems are rarely at the generating asset itself. Sites are assembled parcel by parcel across many owners and common land, and the evacuation line that makes the plant viable crosses the forest, habitat and settlements the site was routed to avoid. Thermal assets carry their own tightening emission and ash-utilisation obligations, while any carbon or renewable-attribute claim has to survive scrutiny from offtakers, registries and lenders.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Land and evacuation', 'text': 'Land aggregation and transmission right of way move through revenue records, grazing commons and forest land, where Forest Conservation Act approvals and resettlement obligations set the real schedule.'}
  • {'title': 'Lender safeguards', 'text': 'Renewable and grid portfolios financed by development banks or syndicated offshore are appraised against IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles, not only against Indian consent conditions.'}
  • {'title': 'Carbon claim scrutiny', 'text': 'Offtakers, registries and lenders expect baselines, additionality and MRV that survive third-party validation rather than an internal estimate of avoided emissions.'}

What we deliver

  • Clearances, ESIA and biodiversity assessment
  • Lender due diligence and ESMP design
  • GHG accounting and MRV for carbon projects
  • EHS systems for construction and operations
RenewablesCarbon
04Mining

A mine cannot be moved to a more convenient location. The ore body sits where it sits — often under forest, close to a wildlife corridor, or beneath land that people farm and hold recognised rights over — so approval turns on evidence assembled before anything is excavated: ecological baselines, gram sabha proceedings, resettlement entitlements and closure land use. Regulators, lenders and neighbouring communities keep testing that evidence base for the life of the lease and beyond it.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Stacked clearances', 'text': 'A single project can require environmental clearance under the EIA Notification 2006 alongside forest and wildlife clearance where it falls near a protected area or corridor, each with its own evidence and conditions.'}
  • {'title': 'Community consent', 'text': 'Land access, gram sabha consent on forest land and resettlement obligations govern the schedule as firmly as geology, and disagreements resurface years after the first agreement is signed.'}
  • {'title': 'Closure liability', 'text': 'Progressive and final mine closure plans carry financial assurance and post-closure land use commitments that regulators track across the lease and that lenders applying IFC Performance Standards test before and during disbursement.'}

What we deliver

  • ESIA, forest and wildlife clearance support
  • Biodiversity baselines and management plans
  • Land access, resettlement and grievance mechanisms
  • Lender safeguard monitoring and EHS audits
BiodiversityRAP
05Real Estate

A building's footprint is decided twice: once in the concrete and steel that go into it, and again across decades of operation by occupiers the developer does not control. Certification is awarded on design intent, while the data investors ask for is measured performance across assets sitting on different leases, meters and management contracts. On site the pressures are more immediate — dust, groundwater abstraction, demolition waste and a labour force that changes with every subcontractor.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Site-stage compliance', 'text': 'Projects crossing the built-up area threshold under the EIA Notification 2006 need prior clearance, and construction then runs up against groundwater abstraction approvals, Construction and Demolition Waste Rules and dust-control directions that can stop work outright.'}
  • {'title': 'Split carbon accountability', 'text': 'Embodied carbon is fixed at procurement while operational carbon sits with occupiers, so a credible target needs both supplier data and tenant-level metering.'}
  • {'title': 'Portfolio-level disclosure', 'text': "Listed developers inside SEBI's BRSR thresholds report energy, water and waste performance, and the BRSR Core attributes carry an assurance requirement that pushes asset data into comparable form across a portfolio."}

What we deliver

  • Clearance and consent management for developments
  • GHG inventories across owned and leased assets
  • Portfolio ESG strategy and BRSR reporting
  • Construction EHS oversight and safety audits
ESGWater
06Financial Services

In financial services the material impacts sit outside the institution — in the loan book, the investment portfolio and the transactions being underwritten. Measuring them means building estimates from counterparty data that is incomplete, inconsistent or absent, and then defending those estimates to supervisors, lenders and investors. Exclusion lists and covenants mean something only if someone is checking what sits behind each exposure.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Financed emissions', 'text': 'The material footprint sits in Scope 3 Category 15 of the GHG Protocol, where emissions must be attributed to loans and investments using counterparty data the institution does not control.'}
  • {'title': 'Supervisory attention', 'text': "Climate-related financial risk sits on the supervisory agenda through the Reserve Bank's disclosure framework for regulated entities, while SEBI's BRSR Core requires assurance over specified ESG indicators for listed entities in scope."}
  • {'title': 'Transaction safeguards', 'text': 'Project and infrastructure lending brings IFC Performance Standards, and the Equator Principles where the lender is a signatory, into credit approval, with conditions monitored over the life of the facility.'}

What we deliver

  • Emissions accounting for loans and investments
  • Climate risk and scenario analysis
  • BRSR Core and IFRS S2 reporting support
  • Due diligence on environmental and social risk
ISSBRisk
07Government

Public programmes carry their environmental and social obligations at the design stage — in siting, in land acquisition, and in the conditions attached to a sanction or a loan agreement. Where funding comes from a multilateral lender, a separate safeguard framework runs alongside domestic clearance and the same implementing agency has to satisfy both. Departments are also answerable in a way private developers are not: to auditors, to courts, and to the people a programme displaces.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Dual safeguard regimes', 'text': 'MDB-funded programmes must meet the World Bank ESF, ADB SPS or an equivalent framework at the same time as clearance under the EIA Notification 2006 and the Forest Conservation Act.'}
  • {'title': 'Involuntary resettlement', 'text': 'Displacement under the RFCTLARR Act and lender policy requires documented consultation, entitlement frameworks, livelihood restoration and a working grievance mechanism before works can proceed.'}
  • {'title': 'Delivery capacity', 'text': 'Safeguard commitments made at appraisal are executed by state agencies and contractors, and lapse without training, monitoring systems and clear reporting lines.'}

What we deliver

  • ESIA and safeguard framework preparation
  • Consultation, entitlement and resettlement planning
  • Monitoring of environmental and social performance
  • Safeguard training for implementing agencies
PolicyMDB
08Healthcare

A hospital cannot pause. Theatres, wards, imaging and cold chain draw power continuously, and the most hazardous waste stream is generated at the bedside by clinical staff whose first duty is the patient rather than the segregation bin. Compliance here is as much a behavioural problem as an engineering one: colour-coded segregation, sharps handling, effluent treatment and standby power all have to hold on every shift.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Waste at source', 'text': 'The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules require segregation, labelling, limits on on-site storage and authorised disposal, with records tracing waste from the ward to the common treatment facility.'}
  • {'title': 'Occupational exposure', 'text': 'Sharps injuries, chemical disinfectants, anaesthetic gases and biological agents put clinical and support staff at a risk that generic safety training does not address.'}
  • {'title': 'Continuous energy demand', 'text': 'Round-the-clock ventilation, cooling, refrigeration and diesel standby make energy and refrigerant use a permanent operating cost and a persistent emissions source.'}

What we deliver

  • Waste segregation systems and compliance audits
  • ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation
  • HIRA and clinical EHS training
  • GHG accounting and energy efficiency reviews
EHSBRSR
09Education

A campus is a small settlement — hostels, canteens, laboratories, transport, water and waste — run by departments that each hold a fragment of the data, for a resident population that turns over every few years. Little of the agenda here is statutory; outside laboratory waste, e-waste and effluent, the pressure comes from accreditation panels, rankings, donors and students. That makes claims easy to make and hard to defend, which is why the numbers have to be assembled properly.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Voluntary, not statutory', 'text': 'Most campus commitments are driven by reputation, accreditation and donor expectations rather than law, so they stand or fall on the quality of the evidence behind them.'}
  • {'title': 'Fragmented estate data', 'text': 'Energy, water and waste figures sit with separate departments, hostels and contractors, and an institutional footprint has to be assembled before anything can be managed or reported.'}
  • {'title': 'Laboratory and e-waste duties', 'text': 'Chemical and biological waste from laboratories and end-of-life equipment from IT estates fall under the hazardous waste and e-waste rules, with authorisation, storage and disposal obligations attached.'}

What we deliver

  • Campus GHG inventories and energy baselines
  • Effluent, water and waste audits
  • Sustainability reporting against GRI Standards
  • Laboratory EHS and chemical safety training
StrategyGRI
10Transport

Transport assets are linear or coastal — a rail alignment, a highway package, a port basin — and each stretch meets a different constraint: forest and wildlife corridors inland, the CRZ Notification at the shoreline, settlement and noise where the route enters a city. The case is therefore built segment by segment and defended before several authorities, while construction runs on fronts far apart under separate contractors. In operation, freight customers then ask the same assets for emissions data they were never built to collect.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Coastal and forest constraints', 'text': 'Port and terminal works fall under the CRZ Notification, highway packages above the notified threshold need environmental clearance in their own right, and alignments crossing forest land or notified habitat require approval under the Forest Conservation Act and Wildlife Protection Act.'}
  • {'title': 'Dispersed construction fronts', 'text': 'A corridor is delivered through many packages across districts, so monitoring, grievance handling and lender reporting have to work consistently at distance and across contractors.'}
  • {'title': 'Freight emissions scrutiny', 'text': 'Listed customers reporting under BRSR Core ask transport operators for activity and fuel data to close out their own Scope 3 inventories under the GHG Protocol.'}

What we deliver

  • ESIA for corridors, ports and terminals
  • Biodiversity screening and mitigation planning
  • MDB safeguards compliance and lender reporting
  • GHG accounting for operations and fleets
ESIASafeguards
11Construction

Construction risk is concentrated into a short build phase, on a site that changes shape weekly and is staffed largely by contractor and subcontractor labour. Work at height, lifting, excavation and hot work each need their own permit and control regime, while dust, debris and night working make the site visible to regulators and neighbours at once. Responsibility for all of it stays with the principal employer, whatever the subcontract says.

Pressures

  • {'title': 'Layered contractor labour', 'text': 'Crews arrive through several tiers of subcontracting and turn over quickly, so induction, competence and BOCW Act obligations have to be re-established continuously rather than established once.'}
  • {'title': 'Site-level enforcement', 'text': 'Dust suppression, noise limits and Construction and Demolition Waste Rules duties are enforced by direct site inspection, and in Delhi-NCR the Graded Response Action Plan can halt construction outright rather than penalise it later.'}
  • {'title': 'Conditions passed down', 'text': 'Developers and lenders write ESMP commitments into construction contracts, and contractors are then audited against evidence their site systems were never built to produce.'}

What we deliver

  • Site EHS systems built to ISO 45001
  • Contractor pre-qualification and safety audits
  • HIRA, permit-to-work and incident investigation
  • Dust, noise and water quality monitoring

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Which framework should we start with?

It depends on your obligations and stakeholders. Listed Indian entities often begin with BRSR; investor-driven organisations prioritise ISSB. We help you sequence sensibly.

Are these frameworks compatible?

Increasingly, yes. GRI, ISSB and BRSR share common data foundations. We design reporting so a single data core serves multiple disclosures.

What makes a disclosure assurance-ready?

Traceable data, documented methodology and consistent controls. We build these in from the start so your reporting withstands external verification.

Need to report against one of these?

Tell us where you are today and we will map a practical path forward.

SECTOR EXPERTISE

Every sector fails
compliance differently

Eleven industries, eleven sets of regulators, risks and reporting duties. Pick yours and see exactly where we come in.

01 / 11

Infrastructure

Large infrastructure is committed at financial close, but the environmental and social work that decides whether a site can be handed over starts long before it and continues past commissioning. Land acquisition, forest diversion and resettlement each move on their own statutory timeline, and none of them compresses to match a construction programme.

EIA 2006RFCTLARR 2013Forest Conservation ActIFC PSEquator Principles
Discuss an infrastructure project
02 / 11

Manufacturing

A plant's licence to operate is written in measurable terms — consent conditions, effluent parameters, stack limits, waste manifests — and every one of them is auditable on an ordinary working day. The same plant is now asked for assured disclosure and Scope 3 data by listed parents, buyers and lenders, while the process heat running its boilers, furnaces and dryers has no drop-in substitute.

SPCB ConsentsBRSR CoreISO 14001ISO 45001PAT Scheme
Discuss a manufacturing project
03 / 11

Energy

An energy project's hardest problems are rarely at the generating asset itself. Sites are assembled parcel by parcel across many owners and common land, and the evacuation line that makes the plant viable crosses the forest, habitat and settlements the site was routed to avoid.

EIA 2006Forest Conservation ActIFC PSEquator PrinciplesVerra VCS
Discuss an energy project
04 / 11

Mining

A mine cannot be moved to a more convenient location. The ore body sits where it sits — often under forest, close to a wildlife corridor, or beneath land that people farm and hold recognised rights over — so approval turns on evidence assembled before anything is excavated: ecological baselines, gram sabha proceedings, resettlement entitlements and closure land use.

EIA 2006Forest Conservation ActWildlife Protection ActIFC PSEquator Principles
Discuss a mining project
05 / 11

Real Estate

A building's footprint is decided twice: once in the concrete and steel that go into it, and again across decades of operation by occupiers the developer does not control. Certification is awarded on design intent, while the data investors ask for is measured performance across assets sitting on different leases, meters and management contracts.

EIA 2006C&D Waste RulesECBCBRSR CoreGHG Protocol
Discuss a real estate project
06 / 11

Financial Services

In financial services the material impacts sit outside the institution — in the loan book, the investment portfolio and the transactions being underwritten. Measuring them means building estimates from counterparty data that is incomplete, inconsistent or absent, and then defending those estimates to supervisors, lenders and investors.

BRSR CoreIFRS S2GHG ProtocolEquator PrinciplesIFC PS
Discuss a financial services project
07 / 11

Government

Public programmes carry their environmental and social obligations at the design stage — in siting, in land acquisition, and in the conditions attached to a sanction or a loan agreement. Where funding comes from a multilateral lender, a separate safeguard framework runs alongside domestic clearance and the same implementing agency has to satisfy both.

World Bank ESFADB SPSEIA 2006RFCTLARR 2013Forest Conservation Act
Discuss a government project
08 / 11

Healthcare

A hospital cannot pause. Theatres, wards, imaging and cold chain draw power continuously, and the most hazardous waste stream is generated at the bedside by clinical staff whose first duty is the patient rather than the segregation bin.

BMW Rules 2016ISO 45001ISO 14001SPCB ConsentsGHG Protocol
Discuss a healthcare project
09 / 11

Education

A campus is a small settlement — hostels, canteens, laboratories, transport, water and waste — run by departments that each hold a fragment of the data, for a resident population that turns over every few years. Little of the agenda here is statutory; outside laboratory waste, e-waste and effluent, the pressure comes from accreditation panels, rankings, donors and students.

GRIGHG ProtocolISO 14001E-Waste RulesNAAC
Discuss an education project
10 / 11

Transport

Transport assets are linear or coastal — a rail alignment, a highway package, a port basin — and each stretch meets a different constraint: forest and wildlife corridors inland, the CRZ Notification at the shoreline, settlement and noise where the route enters a city. The case is therefore built segment by segment and defended before several authorities, while construction runs on fronts far apart under separate contractors.

EIA 2006CRZ NotificationWildlife Protection ActIFC PSADB SPS
Discuss a transport project
11 / 11

Construction

Construction risk is concentrated into a short build phase, on a site that changes shape weekly and is staffed largely by contractor and subcontractor labour. Work at height, lifting, excavation and hot work each need their own permit and control regime, while dust, debris and night working make the site visible to regulators and neighbours at once.

ISO 45001BOCW ActC&D Waste RulesISO 14001IFC PS 2
Discuss a construction project

WHAT RECURS

The standards that cross sectors

Of 25 standards across the eleven sectors, 13 apply to more than one and 12 apply to a single sector. The number is how many sectors each one reaches.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

What is the difference between EIA and ESIA?

An EIA focuses on environmental impacts, while an ESIA integrates social dimensions — communities, livelihoods and resettlement — to meet international lender expectations.

Do you support multilateral lender requirements?

Yes. We prepare documentation aligned with IFC Performance Standards, World Bank ESF and Equator Principles, ready for external assurance.

Can you manage clearances end-to-end?

We support the full permitting cycle — from baseline studies and stakeholder consultation to submissions and regulatory liaison.

ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL ADVISORY

Environmental & Social Advisory

End-to-end environmental and social advisory across the project lifecycle — from impact assessment and due diligence to clearances, monitoring and permitting.

WHAT WE DO

Scope of work

Major projects face rising scrutiny from regulators, lenders and communities. Getting environmental and social risk right — early and rigorously — protects timelines, financing and reputation. We combine technical assessment with lender-standard documentation that withstands external review.
